I have a Toshiba notebook computer and unfortunately had to remove the
keyboard incuding unplugging the flimsy little connection plug.
Since then the Shift key refuses to work resulting in my having to use a USB
keyboard. All the other keys work fine and have tried fiddling with the plug
all without success.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Keep the USB keyboard, cheaper, less headache and will allow your Notebook to run despite your meddling with its bits. I hate laptop KBs anyways, solutions - rolling waterproof KB and small footprint KBs, will fit in laptop case.
