will a ati 5870 (pci2.1) work with a pcie 1 motherboard

also will it play hdtv through a hdmi cable with sound through it too?

Yes it will work because PCI-E 2.0 is backward compatible with PCI-E 1.0,and yes it can play HDTV through a HDMI cable with sound if you have the right LCD for it
