Need some advices with new build!

Hello guys,

i'm about to buy new gaming rig for myself. I'm considering on buying i7 920 system, but also was looking at PII 955. Adding up all the prices i7 costs only ~150£ more, and i do think that spending that money is worth what i'll be getting from i7.

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: this week, the most i can spend is 1.4£

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT:gaming and watching movies, maybe working with CAD

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: mouse

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: overclockers.co.uk or ebuyer.com or any other shop in uk that is cheaper than those listed before.

PARTS PREFERENCES: got no preferences, just want the best for my money.

OVERCLOCKING: Yes would like to oc i7 to 4ghz, if i would go with AMD 955 3.8ghz maybe more if will be lucky
SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Maybe, for now i'm looking at 5870, i think it should do fine for me.

MONITOR RESOLUTION: i'd like to get 24" minitor, i would appreciate if you could recommend something good but not to expensive.

So for now i'm thinking about these builts:

And here i'm confused, intel costs only 137quid more, but i'm getting i7 920. Probably you'r thinking why i have chosen dual ramm insted of tripple for i7, my answer is that i'v read somewhere that it's possible to run i7 with dual ramm, and i see no need having 6gb, i think 4gb is enough, but i don't know how good i7 will work with dual channel ramm, i'd like to hear your opinion about this issue :)

I'd like you to give me some advices what i could change maybe save some money, but wont loose any performance, or even gain something :)

More about need advices build
  1. how bout an i5 its better then the 955 but just under the 920

just switch the cpu and board on the amd build

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-301-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1272

    and this cooler http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-041-ZA

    the i5 reaches 4ghz easy
  2. Well and i7 920 can run with dual channel ram but it won't run at its full potential. If you can try triple channel ram, 3GB,6GB,12GB. But either way I would get an i5.
  3. Well i was thinking about i5 also, but then i'm more confused, cause i think that getting i7 is much more wise choise, how well 920 would look OC'ed to max compared to i5 OC'ed to 4ghz? if 920 wins than i know what i'll be getting. cause i want this pc to last few years, upgrading RAMM or VIDEO in feature.
  4. Take a look at my thread on my new build. I love it!

  5. highest cocked i7 920 http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=687666

    highest clocked i5 http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=742618

only bout 300mhz difference on the highest ever clocked i7 920 and i5 750
  6. Thx for advices, but probably i'll stick to i7 920 (dreaming about that CPU), the only question that i need to solve now is what RAMM should i choose, i might be able to save some money by dropping SB from my rig, and getting better RAMM, as i know DDR2 CL7 was one of the best ones, but talking about i7 i'v got now idea which one i should choose, i think that CL7 is best thing but what difference CL8 or CL9 RAMM would make, i'd like to OC mine 920 to 4ghz, so which RAMM would allow me to achieve that result?

    Thx
  7. Hmm...you are getting DDR2 ram? why not DDR3?
-For CAD, i suggest you dont be conservative on ram. CAD will make world war two on your computer, it will attack on all fronts, the CPU, RAM, and VIDEO. If you wont work with cad and just play games and watch movies, 1066Mhz,1333mhz or maybe 1600mhz ram with CL9 will do fine. If you are using cad, i would suggest getting more expensive ones like 1800MHz+ and CL6 or CL7.
-CAD makes all the difference in what you need :).
