I have a hard drive that is going mad and I need to copy the files. On my last attempt at copying an entire hard drive, I tried to select and control +c (copy) all the files and folders inside C:/. When I pasted these files and folders into my external hard drive, it would hang for forever until closed and copied only one folder. ( the hard drive contents were around 200 gb). Now I need your help to copy all the folders and files of my hard drive not as a compressed back-up, but copy and paste all the folders and files from the old hard drive in some way.

If you are booted into the drive you are copying you should not copy the swap file, and you should not need to copy the Windows folder.

Also, you might try copying the files from a command prompt using xcopy. For usage type xcopy /?
