so if I purchased a PCI Express 2.0 x16 video card and put it into a PCI Express x16 it would work except bandwidth of 2.0 ?

yes, it would work perfectly. I have a GA 965P DS3(PCI E x16 1.0) and HIS HD 4850(PCI E x16 2.0), no problems so far... :)

pcie 2.0 just has more bandwidth when you plug in a 2.0 card to a 1.x slot the card should just run with the available bandwidth which unless you are running like a 295 or 5970 shouldn't be a hindrance.

Proof is in the P55 sli and crossfire where you only get x8 x8 lanes of pcie 2.0 which is = to a full x16 lane of pcie 1.0 in terms of bandwidth and the frame rate drop is basically nothing vs a x55 build which could just be attributed to the different memory and cpu.
