Im searching through newegg and Im coming across ram here are some examples... 2400@ 11-11-11-30.......1600@9-9-9-24...1333@8-8-8-20 and so on. So im thinking weither its worth it to invest in 1600+ ram or just go with 1333. From what it looks like 1333 up to 1866 i think...has a voltage of 1.5-1.65 but in say the 2400 speed range there is nothing below 1.65. So what this says to me is that the factory is overclocking the ram before sending it out to specified timings that were found stable durring overclock testing. for example...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144483

some reviews say they have been able to get it up to 1866 or higher with loose 11-11-11-30 or somthing along those lines......which is roughly what those timings are at when 1866 ram is purchased.

now im aware of the general rule at the moment that anything above 1333 is basicly pointless however this doesnt change what question im asking which is..."does the factories overclock for example 1333 ram and sell it advertised as 1600" cause id much rather buy $30 1333 ram than $60 1600 ram. Thanks guys!!

i've run my cheap elixir ddr3 1600 at 1333 and cl 6-6-6-18 @1.65v. and it works like a charm..
DDR3 RAM rated above 1333MHz is overclocked; the RAM has been tested by the manufacturer to work at the stated speed, voltage, and latencies. The the higher the OC, the better the chips on the sticks.

And the end user will almost always need to apply the settings in the motherboard BIOS to achieve the rated settings.

Higher speeds will show their stuff in benchmarking, but the premium prices on the high-speed RAM may not the be worth their cost. 1600MHz RAM seems the most popular - look for the lowest latencies you can afford.

1600mhz at cas 10 or 9 latency is dirt cheap, and as high quality ram as you'll need. You may need to adjust your bios to have it run at that speed, but it's very easy to do this on any bios unlocked computer.
Any voltage up to 1.65v is safe for your computer. No heat issues have been reported for any current-generation ram, and the power useage is very low.

@treefog07

so if i understand correctly, The factories pump out all 1333 ram and based on the quality of chip used...the factories overclock them and sell them at different speeds@different prices?

if this were the case would you say...be able to downclock a stick of 1866 or 2400 to 1333 and get great timings like 6-6-6 or even 5-5-5?

@stingstang

ive heard that sandy bridge doenst like memory that is over 1.5v thats what i heard anyways. and 1333 memory is cheaper than sticks of 1600.

Maybe they use old style chips and the 2400 speed ram is the fresh off the line flagship chip
