Computer suddenly very slow xp

Hello,
Two days ago my PC began running extremely slowly - no new programmes loaded, no strange web sites searched. There are no sounds of activity from the hard drive for what sounds like minutes on end, even in the middle of performing an instruction. HELP

Have task manager running & look to see what is using high CPU cycles.
Run AV & Malware scanners. Remember, a single clean scan does not necessarily mean you are not infected.
Ksiemb's right, re-arrage your files well on your PC.
Remove downloaded .exes/files etc from your desktop if ever, do a disk cleanup.
Also do a disk defragmenter afterwards. If all the above does not solve your issue, they your computer might be infected, update your AV package and run a full scan!
