Install Windows Updates on laptop while continuing to use laptop

Last response: in Windows XP

My laptop is running XP Home Edition with SP3.
I would like to be able to download windows updates and then install them immediately after downloading while continuing to use the laptop. I do this with my desktop. However, on the laptop, I get no indication that the downloads have completed and the only way I can find to install the updates is to select <Shut down> and then select <Install and Restart> or <Install and Shutdown>.
I just want to get the updates installed and shutdown/restart when I'm ready as I do on my desktop.

How do I do this?

Thanks for helping out.
