XP not booting

When i am trying to start my system(windows xp) i keep getting the option of: start windows normally, safe mode, safemode with command prompt etc. But when i choose any of the options it keeps comming back to the same screen.
Booting is not proceeding successfully.
I had Guardian antivirus installed on my system.

More about booting
  1. That is the point where I would remove any data I needed and could off the HDD. Next step is to format the drive and reinstall assuming the HDD is functioning as it should.
  2. Can you go to msconfig and select the safe boot option and boot to safe mode first, then reboot without the safe boot option selected to see if this corrects the problem?
