Pentium 4 3.2 HT (640) how bad bottleneck?

Forum CPU & Components : CPUs Pentium 4 3.2 HT (640) how bad bottleneck?

Hi ,

Just wondering how much would a P4 3.2 HT cpu be bottlenecking my system in games ect.

I got a HD5850 and 4gb OCZ DDR2 800 ram, 500gb HDD 32mb cache.

Thanks,
Havok

i have the same system currently and it runs fine, however i dont run high FPS games so I am interested so see what others think on this topic

P4 with HD5850 lol.

P4 will bottleneck even a 9800GT.

It is a huge huge bottleneck.
That Card can run games at 19X10 resolution but your CPU will limit it to 1024X768 in most games or even less.

You are wasting that cards potential.

It depends. If you game on a a 17" monitor it's not a problem. But if you have a 22 or 24 inch monitor, your CPU can only push that 5850 to only about 60% of the videocard's capacity.

Thanks for your reply's. Ill be buying a AMD Phenom II 955 Black edition in about 2 weeks to replace it :) that should make things alot better right?

Thanks again!

P.S I have a LG 20" 2ms LCD.

Reply to havok85

Yes, you will see a HUGE improvement.

A Pentium4 is a huge bottleneck on the high end 5850. A PII 955 will do great =)

Great to know =D

Ill keep my 4gb OCZ DDR2 800mhz Reaper ram because i see no point in buying another 4gb in DDR3. I looked it up and found out that the difference is basicly nothing.

Cheers

You are kidding right, this is only a joke. You want to put one of the fastest video card with a processor that was considered slow 6 years ago. HUGE BOTTLENECK. upgrade your proccessor to something half decent before even considering the 5850.

If you look up afew you might notice i said im getting a PII 955 in 2 weeks??

Sure its a LG Flatron W2053TQ.

yea i have 4gb. I have heard that the cooler that comes with the PII 955 is really bad so any ideas as to which cooler i should get?

Thanks

Reply to havok85

Nice thanks for that.

I was just going to OC it to like 965 spec. I just heard the fan was loud so thought ill grab something quieter =D

i've come accross worse like some guy with a prescott a 5970 and 1gb ram

There is nothing wrong with the cooler, the Phenom IIs especially the black editions usually come with copper heatpipes. If you're not overclocking I wouldnt bother replacing the cooler, even on the stock heatsink+fan you should get atleast a small overclock without high temperatures.

Below are some good coolers though:

Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme Revision 2
Zalman CNPS9900A
Zalman CNPS 9700
Scythe Mugen 2

the 9 series zalmans are crap

some of the best out now are
noctua 14d
thermalright venomous X
prolimatech megashadow

if you want cheaper

titan fenrir
coolermaster v8
cooler master hyper 212+

Reply to obsidian86

I was looking at the Coolermaster V8 but ill have to take the pipe of the side of my case that sits over the cpu.

OH MY GOD a p4 with 5850!!! LOL !!!!

a 5850 on a 20" monitor too. what a waste of GPU horsepower.

I had a P4 650 partnered with a X1950 pro and had the choice whether to upgrade CPU or GPU. I figured the CPU was the bottleneck and moved to a Q6600 and got a huge framerate increase (I made the right choice), so your CPU will definitely be limiting you.

I assume that your motherboard is a socket 775 so you know you're going to have to change that to go with a phenom - just checking. If you're keeping your motherboard then go to the manufacturers web page and see what chips are supported, you may need to upgrade your bios to get some of the intel CPUs to run, but at least you'll know your options.

yes Im changing the board. I had to find one with ddr2 since alot of them are ddr3 and i wanted to keep the current ram.

anyone know about the issues with ocz reaper ram sitting under a coolermaster V8?
some guy said it would fit for him.

The stock cooler that comes with the Phenom II's is pretty good.
3/4ths of this video is the guy opening the box, talk about over dramatic, or they just plain wanted to be annoying, but anyway at the end of the clip they give you a good look at the heatsink.

Oh yeah, I'll pile it on you too. P4 and a 5800 series GPU, now that is just too funny.
Hold on, yeah you are in for a big surprise when you get the Phenom running.
But it's not just the GPU, that Phenom II is literally 2-3 times faster than the old P4 you had, at EVERYTHING.

yea i had originally 2gb worth of *** ram and a 6600 128mb. AOC was basicly unplayable it would just freeze and get like 3fps.. so decided to grab the ocz reaper 4gb worth and up the card.

I didnt see spending alot on a dx10 since they had dx11 out and the 5700 series didnt look very impressive(will they even be able to run a dx11 game?) so i thought ill just grab the high end card and upgrade the cpu later on.
