Can a larger and faster hard disc drive be installed in a Compaq 2806CL
notebook? I presently have a 40GB 4200 rpm hard drive, and it's pretty
obvious that this hard disc is a weak point in performance. If one can be
installed, would I actually notice the difference in performance, or are
there other limiting factors such as bus speed.?

Can't answer your first question, but replacing the 20Gb 4200rpm drive in my
Sony C1MT with a Hitachi 60Gb 7200rpm drive has made a noticeable difference
to performance in anything involving disk I/O, such as booting the system,
loading Photoshop, opening and saving files, etc. And the battery life
doesn't seem much diminished by the faster drive, so its power consumption
doesn't seem to be much different.

I did this with a Sony Vaio.
4200 rpm 20G to a 7200rpm 60G.
Stayed with same HDD manufacturer(Hitachi).
I run audio recording/processing applications which contain massive
sample banks and the speed at which they now load is
impressive,previously I might wait up to 30 seconds,which feels like a
full two minutes when you're sat there staring at a screen.
Now I hardly notice the load time.
It's akin to doubling your ram I'd say.
No "issues" so far ;-)
I was concerned that their might be but took the plunge without
investigating fully.

Hey thanks guys. That's exactly the information I need, and it all sounds
hopeful. Guess I better start shopping for that new drive. -- Leon
