With a HD4870 512 MB,
I see the bios on the sapphire website, and "instructions" on how to load it BUT...
the instructions leave out 90% of the information on "HOW" to actually use it!
considering that I will need to make a CD with the bios on it, and load it in DOS mode,
Would anybody care to walk me through this step by step (instruction for idiot please)
Sapphire does not actually explain how to do this...It would seem that the support Sapphire lends to customers leaves quite a bit to be desired.

My 4870 card will not detect using "smart doctor" on an ASUS MOBO. ASUS says that it SHOULD detect.
Having loaded the latest drivers, the card seems to have less bugs than it did originally, but still has some issues, that I hope will be solved by updating the bios.
Others have mentioned that they solved 4870 issues by updating the bios.

I would like to use the ASUS apps to control the card, but the card can't be detected.

Thanks very much in advance if you know how to do this, and would be so kind as to explain. NT

Follow this guide.

But be very careful. Doing this incorrectly could render the card completely useless.

Thanks Viper, that was a very kind reply.
I understand that a bios flash failure could render the card FUBAR...
Why doesn't the manufacturer supply an update in the windows environment?
Why doesn't the manufacturer supply a ready made disk to repair a bios crash?

Sure the ATI graphics are great looking, but the customer support and manuals suck.
I would pay 5-10 dollars more to get some backup and support.
It seems like a lot of manufacturers leave the customer hanging out to dry!
And many others have said this: I would think twice about buying another ATI graphics card. After all, why should the customer have to jump through hoops of fire just to make the card work like it's supposed to???

Much appreciate the Viper's help!

Neither ATi nor nVidia offer a quick and easy BIOS upgrade method.

They use the drivers to provide incremental updates to the cards instead.

Then they both suck.
Where's Filo Farnsworth when we need him?

BIOS updates are messy. Look at how antiquated the motherboard BIOS upgrade method largely remains - floppy discs. And the dangers they create given how easy it is to screw up the product via the BIOS, it's logical to use the drivers instead as a safer and easier means to update their product lines.

Could I make a wish for a really good video card that's not made in China? :ouch:
