Ohhhhhhh boy this is BAD! I'm typing this from my dad's laptop, as my computer is in pieces right now. Everything was going fine, until I discovered that my power supply has no 8 pin 12v connector.

Damnit! I have the new Mobo all screwed down, I've got the CPU and heatsink attached, the ram has been installed, but then I get down to the point where I connect all the cables, and poof! everything goes to hell.

My system:
EVGA X58 SLI LE
Corsair Dominator 1600
Core i7 920
Antec Earthwatts EA430W
Visiontek Radeon 3870

What do I do? The EVGA SLI LE needs this connection...and I guess I need to buy myself a new PSU. But which one? I haven't researched PSU's in forever - please give me suggestions or something. I am so frustrated with the whole thing right now.

PS: Keep in mind I do want to overclock, do molex to 8pins keep a stable power flow?

Thanks in advance for your help,
AJ

I see you having a few options beside buying a new PSU.

1) Just plug in the 4-pin 12v connector into your motherboard. This should still give you enough power to run your PC.
2) You can purchase a 4-pin to 8-pin adaptor from Newegg to convert the 4-pin into the required 8-pin.

You didn't list it, so what is your GPU you will be using since the MOBO has no onboard video?

^ Ummm. Yeah. If you are planning on running any type of higher end gaming video card, you are going to need a new PSU anyway. The Antec Earthwatts 430 is not going to cut it.
I am going out on a limb here and assuming by looking at the rest of your parts, you are building something that will be strong gaming machine as well.

To answer Techmo's question, I've got a Visiontek Radeon 3870 graphics card, but I definitely plan to upgrade that card to something faster, and possibly run 2x sli or crossfire (I never plan to 3x sli).

Now, keep in mind, I want to overclock the i7 920. Will my system be equally stable with the 4pin to 8pin connection you recommended? What about a molex to 8pin connection, how would that work?

So jitpublisher, what psu would you have in mind?? What do you think of the CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX?

Is that enough power to SLI later on?

As for my recommendation, I would not recommend it if you plan on adding a more powerful GPU setup down the road, with an OC'd i7 920.

Your best bet would be getting the 750TX, which is a great PSU and powerful enough for Crossfire or SLI down the road

Ok, well I definitely want to both OC and upgrade the graphics, so I may as well fix the problem now. As the corsair 750xt is on sale right now @ newegg, I'll just order it up.

In the meantime, I'll hook my system up to the antec 430w to get things rolling.

Up and running!!! Set the ram to xmp profile 1, running that @ 1600mhz now, everything is blazing fast!! I'll upload pictures soon.

Any suggestions on useful programs to download now that I'm running Windows 7 x64? I've started collecting my usuals, adobe cs4, firefox, imgburn, my steam games, of course haha. Anything I haven't heard of that would be useful?

Also, my EVGA SLI LE's audio drivers wouldn't install (say they are only compatible with windows xp and vista), and the audio is not working. What do I do?

I installed the realtek drivers found here: http://www.evga.com/support/driver [...] p?switch=2

but still, I have no sound! wth!

Go to EVGA's website and download the Win7 drivers for your motherboard, which there will be one for your audio drivers.

edit: I guess that didn't work for you. :(

Ya, tecmo, I don't get it. I click on "Playback Devices" in Win 7's lower right hand corner.

I see four things: ATI HDMI Output, Speakers, Realtek Digital Output, and Realtek HDMI Output. What the hell am I supposed to do?

When I play sounds, the little activity bar next to the "realtek digital output" one goes up and down, but still, I get no sounds. I'm plugging my speakers in the same way I did when I had xp.

Come on guys, I need some help here...no idea what to do

Does the front panel audio jack work?

Reply to tortnotes

yes, but not the speakers. So, yes, the front panel works, but the back jacks do not work, though windows does detect that I plugged something in.
