Dvd files do not work?

My dvd rom can only work with data cds. DVD films do not work here. What can I do to fix this problem?

Two possibilities.

First, let's rule out the trivial. You stated that it can read data "cds" but not DVD films. Can you read data DVDs, or is this a CD reader? If you're not sure, tell us the model, preferably with a link to the product page.

If it is a DVD reader, are you aware that you need special software to play DVD movies? They have digital rights management and region codes and practically require you to sign your soul away in blood, so only software with the right access technology can play them.

Windows XP does not come with DVD codecs which will have to be installed separately by a third party software such as Power DVD. Vista and Windows 7 have the codecs built in and don't require additional software.

From my experience, when a dvd drive doesn't read some media at all while it did weeks/months/years before, then it is dead. These optical drives tend to die pretty fast so it's a no-brainer. Change it and it will solve the issue.
