So I recently went from an Intel motherboard to an ASUS P5Q3 specifically because the Intel one was having major problems with my RAM, which is 4x2GB Patriot Viper DDR3 7-7-7-20 that needs 1.7V. (Without going into details, this particular Intel board was notorious for problems supporting anything other than the default 1.5V; and would hang randomly with default BIOS settings, or fail to POST entirely if the voltage was adjusted manually).

Anyway, got the new ASUS board at the memory manufacturer's recommendation, and so far seems to be going OK. Couple of questions, though, since this is the first Asus board I've used and I'm not too familiar with memory settings:

1. If I leave the RAM voltage set to "auto", is an Asus board going to detect the correct voltage and ACTUALLY supply 1.7V (unlike the Intel one)? Or am I still better off doing it manually?

2. I've heard that when all four slots are filled with a stick of RAM, they'll actually require MORE voltage than the 1.7V it says in the specs. Is that the case, and if so, how much more? And do I need to adjust any other settings while I'm doing that?

System specs:

Intel Q9550 2.83 gHz (not oc'ed yet)
Asus P5Q3
4x2GB Patriot Viper DDR3 7-7-7-20
Radeon HD4870
NXTZ 850w PSU
