Issue with NEC ND2100 dvd rom drive

Dell Dimension 4600 with two DVD rom drives.

NEC ND2100 writer and a generic DVD reader.

Both drives show unable to start in windows. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling both drivers. No go.

Tried disconnecting one drive, then the other just in case there is a conflict between the drives, no go.

Downloaded firmware upgrade from Dell sight for the NEC drive, the program can't find the drive and errors out.

I can't believe that both drives would crash at the same time.

Are they set as master and slave or cable select?

This was the solution that worked:

Went to the DELL website and on the on-line help link I found a link to a program called "Microsoft Fix-it". Ran the install

via the Internet Explorer, at first it didn't appear as though it did anything. Rebooted the system, and I checked programs

expecting to see some type of utility listed as Microsoft Fix-it, then checked the hardware manager and found that

both drives device drivers were showing up without error.
