well i have ECS a740gm-m MOBO working very nice with athlonx2 4800 on dual DDR2 800 croshair xms2 with ATI 4650 128 bits 450watss PS.. but it lag too much when i play a bit heavy games like crysis even on 800-600 :fou: .. one of my friend told me to upgrade my processor so i wanna know should i buy phenom X4 9650? or do i have another better choice..?

If you can get the Phenom 9650 on the cheap, go for it. How much money are you willing to spend though? According to ECS's site, you could get a Phenom II 905e, but they run around $200, which is not worth it to most people. A google search on the 9650 shows they run around $100, mabe you could find it cheaper used?

and the 4650 is kind lower end eh... that thing wasn't supposed to power a true gamer's machine

but imo, if you just upgraded that gfx it will be bottle necked by ur cpu, right now the two are a match (if not bottlenecked a little by the cpu, but I don' think much)

I'd say save up money for a full AM3 build with a 4890 or 5770 or something in the future (if you wana save cost that is)

note the review:
http://www.guru3d.com/article/ati-radeon-hd-4550-512mb-review/10

it can run some moderate games at 1280*1024, and crysis is not in that category of moderate games

Why does everyone bash the Phenom I like its a red-headed stepchild? The revised versions (9650,9750, etc.) were really not as bad as people make them out. Of course they are slower than newer tech cpus, but unless he wants to upgrade his motherboard, its basically the only option he has.

Yeah, I agree with you on that point. The problem is he's got no other option without upgrading his motherboard. I don't think anyone will suggest the expensive PII 905e, even though technically it is an option. For that price, he might as well save a little more for a full upgrade.

Err except for the distinct possibility that the VRMs on that mobo is most likely a piece of *** (ECS, assume *** otherwise told) and all CPU supported have max 95 W TDP, while the PIIs are usually 125w or 95w and i'll bet even the 95w PIIs would suck more power than a 95w tdp rated Athlon II

because of the quality, I wouldn't trust anything that's not on that list and if it did burn out some VRMs you can say you followed their list and ask for a RMA

EDIT: looks like they do support lower powered PIIs (65w tdp that is triple core, note no 95w PIIs) that is the 705e and the 700e so maybe that's your best bet. remember tho that these "e" versions are low power versions and thus will likely cost more than the average, and have a lower clock speed.

According to the Support list the OPs motherboard (ECS a740gm-m) can support the Athlon IIs without issue, the Phenom II should run as its based on the same architecture.

Good find! I totally missed the Athlon II X4's when I checked that list. I would go that route as they are pretty cheap and give good performance.

I've got a A740GN-M with an Athlon II X2 240 and a ATI 4650 512, 2GB RAM, and I've had nothing but surprisingly good results out of it; I sort of stumbled on to the 4650 (I really wanted a Nvidia), But I can't really imagine needing anything more; 3dmark01 is getting 26,000 scores, Arkham Asykum plays completely lagless at 1024x768, Dirt2 runs just short of perfect.
I thought I'd post to give you some sort of comparison that's in your same general ballpark.
