I want to build a reliable computer for video editing, which means the system will hold large amounts of video on it. i was considering keeping all the video on an external drive(probably 1 or 2TB) but i still want my computer speed to be up to par when I'm running multiple programs at once and playing and editing video. Oh and i need dual screens.

I have a budget of $1200. is this attainable and what components would you recommend?

Frys has the core i7 socket 1156 860 with biostar board for $229 after $20 rebate. But this is in stores only, not online, and ends tomorrow. Newegg will discount some mobo and cpu combos by $20-40. If the board doesn't have an hdmi port, then you can get a decent video card with one for under $100. Can't tell you much about dual monitors, but many new Intel boards work with sli or crossfire multiple card setups. Core i7 is the best for video editing; socket 1366 is still the best performer. The 920 i7 has been $199.99 at microcenter at times, but in store only. Frys large ad is usually on fridays, and lists several combos good for one week.

Agree o1die,

Cpu for video editing:

core i7 920 (LGA 1336, X58)

or

core i7 860 (LGA 1156, P55)

will be the best. The 8 threads the i7 offers will be put to good use.

Sorry with it coming slightly over budget when including an OS. :(

Although if you can fit this budget, it will be a great video editing system. :D

Hope this helps. (if anyone else can edit this to make it fit the budget better, feel free to do so.)
