Windows hang up and freeze windows xp

Hello,
My XP system 32 bit hangs up when I try to use - x or other click command. If I try to use the return to desktop icon, it starts and hangs. If I open a few screens, they finally hang, remain displayed and will not respond. After about 5 minutes, things begin to work again for about 10 minutes then its back. How can I fix what is causing this?

I ran virus scans, malware scans, did cleanups, nothing found, nothing worked.

Is Windows up to date SP3, for example ? If you have your Windows CD you can run System file checker from a command prompt - sfc /scannow
or repair install the OS, after making the CD Rom 1st boot device (f2 setup).
