My verbatim 62872 hard drive not recognized

Hi,
I just got a verbatim 62872 External HDD 320 GB from Australia.
As I connected it to my laptop the led on the top of it started but it is not recognized by my laptop.
So,Please Help me out.

If your drive is powered from the USB port, then try a Y-cable.

A standard USB port is current limited to 500mA. A Seagate ST9500325AS drive, for example, requires about 850mA during spinup, and about 400mA thereafter. A Y-cable is therefore sometimes necessary to pick up power from two USB ports.

Otherwise, how does Microsoft's UVCView utility see the external drive?

Can you see the drive in Device Manager? Disk Management?
