To install a new HSF...

Do I have to take my motherboard out? I checked the back of my zalman z9 case and the whole mobo backplate is showing (all 4 screws). Does this mean I wont have to take out my mobo?

I have an asus m5a97 evo. Which would be the best out of these?

Yes, you are correct. You would not have to remove your motherboard to mount a new Heatsink and fan as long as your case has the cut out.

In regards to what cooler to get I would go with either the Thermalright Venomous X or Prolimatech Megahalems instead, and get a good PWM fan to go along with it.

Your case is 8.1" wide.
So coolers 160mm tall will fit no problem.
Rules out the V6GT = 165mm tall.
What ram kit do you have?
What cpu?

I have G skill ripjaws.

My cpu is an AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE stock (3.4). I'm looking to get to 3.9, possibly 4.0.
