A video card will last you a long time as you can live with medium graphics quality in the long run.
That pretty much sums it up. Some people are happy just being able to play the game, and a card will last them 4 or 5 years. Some people are out to be the next benchmark king and have to spend $400 on a new card every 6 months, and then crossfire it.
Personally, I am more in the first set. My "second" computer was still chugging along with an AGP Radeon 9550 until a few weeks ago, when it finally became clear that more new-release games these days are NOT going to work with it than are. Tropico 3 was the last straw that made me go to a 4650.
Comon 3870 is still a great card. I run everything on max right now. And what i mean is for how long will your video card run games on medium to high graphics?
As ape said, there's no such thing is future proof...you can spend $500 on a graphics card and there'll be another graphics card out next year that's 2x as good.
My 4830 will hold up for 1-2 years in my 2ndary computer that's used for light gaming...
My 4870 will hold up for 6 months since I plan to upgrade to dx11 when the prices go down...

@crazy359.....ur validation of the card's performance is based on Crysis....what will happen when Crysis2 releases next year....that may(will) be another GPU hog.....would u then say ur card is future proof.....Its all upto the next big thing.....

I've got a 4870 and will probably be plenty happy with it for the next couple years.
But as soon as they start coming out with games that REQUIRE DirectX 11, that thing's going out the window. That's always been what causes me to throw out old cards.
I have a pair of 4870x2s, and they should hold on for a while to come. They'll likely be replaced when a good DX11 game (and I mean one that requires DX11) comes out though.

i agree with what capt taco is saying.......some people want dx 11 so they will buy new card for that and some will be happy they are running the game....
