Since you can call virtually any program or script from the command line, and it is straightforward to do this replacement in a high-level language, I don't think that it is cricket to make such a call and present that as a command line solution.

In the meantime, using a hint for a solution to a similar problem that I found at another site, I have developed a way to do this with command line commands. . My solution takes about a dozen commands, per file name and to apply it to all files requires a lot of shoveling between this directory and a temporary directory. I am still hoping that someone will provide a simple solution. If none appears, then I will present the one I have found, even though it is rather ugly.
