Using some ram as a massive cache for hard drive?

OK so I have seen recently hard drives that have a small ssd built into them maybe like a couple of gigs, essentially just a massive cache, they claim to perform almost as well as a ssd only far cheaper but without same level of reliability. eg faster read and right speeds but also providing reducing the risk from power outages that ram disks usually suffer.

so i was wondering if it would be possible to achieve a similar effect by creating a ram disk (as I have more ram then I need at the moment, 8gigs) and then somehow telling that to operate as a massive cache for my main hardrive?

mainly just for some geeky fun, but if any ones got any ideas how to do this would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance.
