How to read a CD-RW file on windows XP?

Hello,
I am a 79 yr old non-tech with a 6-yr old Dell that is slower than "dial up" could ever be. It's probably because I have a VERY full 'Documents' section.I followed the XP book best I could, hoping to put all the Doc files on the CD-RW's. Looks like I did it wrong and have to call an expert. Thanks for all your info.
