Sorry if this has been asked about already.

I have two Western Digital hard drives that are 2TB each, one is a storage drive in my HTPC and the other is its backup (via USB). The file folder properties show that each set of files match each other perfectly in size but there is a discrepancy in available space between the two drives that is driving me crazy. All hidden files are shown and the recycle bins are empty, what could be causing this?

The drives are different model numbers, could that affect the difference in available space? Any other suggestions as to what this could be and if it can be corrected would be much appreciated.

Models are:

WD2002FYPS-01S1B0 (Internal)

WD20EARS-00MVWB0 (USB 3.0)

The discrepancy is 645.296875MB (676,642,816 bytes) in free space

Each drive has it's own trash folder even though there is only one trash icon on the desktop. If you have stuff in your trash can, it could be residing on any drive.

Do you have restore points enabled for one drive and not the other? If so, this can make a difference.

Use windirstat to graphically show you where all the disk space is being used.

possible explanations off the top of my head:
- they aren't partitioned the same (one has unpartitioned space).
- one drive is holding a paging file and the other isn't.
- one drive has indexing enabled and the other doesn't.
- one drive has VSS enabled and the other doesn't.
