Well here is my situation : i just bought a WD Caviar Black 1TB from newegg and i'm considering RMA it since it took 48 hours to format it, doesnt looks normal to me. Right now the format isn't even finished, it's still at 94%

So how can i confirm if this is a faulty HD or not ? Is there some kind of software to test my HD performance and check if it is running as it should be ?

Try WD's solution "Digital Lifeguard" http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=613...

1TB in 50 hours works out to around 5 MB/s.

It could be that your drive is running in PIO mode.

In addition to DLG, you could run a HD Tune benchmark. The read performance graph should be a smooth, monotonically decreasing curve. The access time graph should also have minimal scatter in the data points.

If the drive is in PIO mode, then the "curve" will be a flat line.

PIO mode ? what is that ?

But anyway, i finished format until 100% then it gave me an error and i couldn't reformat anymore. Today when i woke up the HD isn't recognized anymore, it disseapeared from my control panel and it isn't even recognized anymore by windows disk manager. I'm not even sure if it is still spinning anymore... Piece of ***

Try the western digital utility then RMA it. It doesn't sound like your drive is doing very well at all.
