recently my wireless internet has been spiking. I was wondering why and I check the available networks. It seems that one of my neighbors just set up a wireless network. I think that they are connecting to my routor instead of there own. I have no clue of how to set up it so only i can connect to it. Can someone please tell me how?>

Call it "My OWN network" (assign an ID on router), setup a 128bit encription and.. walla, no body but yours only can connect to your OWN wireless network which will be called "My OWN network" (or whatever the heck you'll call it)

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

wow, can someone please help me again. It seems that he's not using my network. After encrypting my network i'm still getting spikes. It seems that his network is somehow interferring with mine. Does anyone know if this is possible and if it is how do i fix it?

Change the frequency base of your AP.(channel). If you've been using channel 6, then try 1 or 11. You might go get and install netstumbler, if your client card is supported (many many are on the latest revision). That will give you an idea of how strong his radio's are impeding your airspace. You could also just cut off your AP and see if you could associate to his. I'm not suggesting you use his network resources but you could get a baseline of how much interference he/she might be causing to your WLAN.

well i'm using netstumbler and he was running on the same channel as mine. So i changed mine to 11 while his is 6. But i Think i'm still getting interference. I'm not sure. I know it's not my equipment. I haven't updated firmware at all. Do you think a firmware upgrade may help?

If it's interference then a firmware flash shouldn't have an effect. Have you talked to the guy? I'd probably go over and talk to him. Work out a deal where he will turn his AP off for an hour or so, then you put your network through it's paces and see if your still experiencing problems. That should tell you if it's him that's causing your problems.

Last thing you can set your router's IP range to be higher than his. By the way, if you are using 2.4Gz phones (same as router's) you WILL have problems with wireless. Turn them off and see.

Well, I figure it has to be interference because since he moved in i've had problems (and since i started to see his network show up). Well it seems ok so far since i changed my channel to 11 when his is set at 6. I hope it stays this way. This is really driving me crazy. And his house is far from mine. (100+ feet plus my wireless pc is many walls back in the house) I was extremely happy with my wireless till this guy moved in. I wonder if he is also getting problems?

Also is there a way in dos that a can ping a website and have it repeat? I know that ping www.google.com or whatever will work I want to keep it running not just stop after 4 packets. I want to check if i fixed it with changing the channel. It's hard to tell if i fixed it. I don't know whether it is a a server when i am in a game or if it is the wireless.

Or ping /help. You can also use the -n switch to specify just how many echos you want to send. Oh, ctrl+c to stop the -t continuous ping.

Is it possible that even though I am on a different channel than my neighbor can I still get interference? If so is there anway of stopping that? Sorry if I'm asking alot of questions but this is getting fustrating.

If he's using something like the DLink Turbo G, which uses much of the 2.4 GSM then your in trouble. As I mentioned before, your about at the point that you need to go have a conversation with him and figure out what he's using and perhaps if you can't work something out. If he is using a Turbo G product, and has it in "turbo" mode, then he uses all of channel 6 and a good part of 1 and 11. If this is the case then he's probably overpowering your WLAN. Perhaps his AP will let him turn the power down. Either that or reposition so the cell isn't bleeding over in your space so much. THat or turn turbo off and only use one channel. Time to go knock on his door I'm afraid and start a dialogue about it. At least see what his position is.

Yeah i guess i do have to have a talk with him. Netstumbler is saying that he is using wireless-b 11mbps. Netstumbler is also saying that i'm using 22mbps wireless be but i don't believe that to be the case since it says i connect at 11mbps and i never set it to that mode.

WOW I HATE WIRELESS. I have switched to my wireless-g router and still get the same problems. The thing is When i get these problems i don't even see my neighbors wireless showing up on net stumbler. I can't figure this out and it's driving me crazy. I will run ping -t or play a game and my ping will jump all around. Sometimes will be between 15-25 ms then spike to 200+ms out of nowhere. And while this spikes are happening the dlink Utility is telling me I have a very good signal strength. This is really fustrating because this just started happening. I've tryed everything. Changing channels, turning off super-g mode. I just can't figure this out. I don't see why it would just start happening.

If it started just as your neighbor setup his WLAN then it's a pretty logical conclusion that is part of the problem. Netstumber wouldn't see his AP with SSID broadcasting turned off. Again, until you go discuss it and work out a solution with him, or at least determine that isn't the problem, then yeah, it's going to be frustrating. Just see if he'll kill his AP for a couple of hours.
