Best value in one core processor for one app

I need to only run two applications (one mathematically intensive, one just a simple vb app not intensive) on my computer (less the OS etc). I need to make them run screaming fast. I don't have a need a for any multi-core processors as the mathematically intensive program won't take advantage of them. I will be running xp, with maxed 4gb ram at highest speed. the goal here is to not spend lots of money as it's just for two programs. what's the best processor for cost and raw processing power? im thinking cheapest single core processor at highest speed and with largest L2 cache would be the pentium 4 3.7ghz with 2mb L2. any input appreciated. thanks!
