I'm just a graphics card away from putting together my brand new pc.
I've been wanting the radeon 5850 but I'm thinking about giving up on that and going for
2 4870s and crossfire them as a replacement.

Should I go for that? or does anyone think 5850s will be in stock somewhere anytime soon...?
Its so hard to wait! >_<

Also, if I do end up doing crossfire, would that mean I should get a vga cooler?

The 4870 doesn't support directX11, nor does it support eyefinity. For today's games, dual 4870's are slightly worse but still very good. For tommorow's games, they just won't cut it anymore.
The 5850 also features lower power consumption and heat generation.

So for short: yes, you should wait.

If you cant wait, a pair of 5770s seems to outperform a single 5850 across the board and still gets you DX11. You wont need a VGA cooler with the low power/heat of the 5770s.

Pretty sure I remember dual 4870's beating out a single 5850 in todays games and also beating out 5770's.

If you are spending that much money, I doubt you want to replace both cards again in 2 years because they are stuck at DX10. 4870s are a bit faster than 5770s so I wouldnt replace one if you had it already, but if you are making a purchase that you want to last more than 2 years I would not buy one anymore.
