450w or 550w corsair?

Antec 300 case
Xigmatek 1283
e5300 at 4ghz 24/7
GA-P35-UD3L
24X DVD reader/burner
150g Velociraptor
4gb ddr2-1066 ram
4870 1gb (might want to overclock)

I want to stick with corsair, would the 450w or 550w be the best bet?

plz keep in mind the mega OC of the processor and possibly overlcock the 4870.

More about 450w 550w corsair
  1. With the OC and 4870, I would go with the 550w.

Have you used the standard calculator?

Although even if it comes up with less I would stick with the 550w if it were my system since PSUs perform better, with less heat and noise and better efficiency when not operated near capacity.
  2. I'd go the 550w if the price isn't an issue. Mainly cuz you'll be in the 300-350w range and the closer to 50% capacity you can run at, the more efficient the PSU is and thus cost less. The 450w can handle that setup, but you're pushing it past peak efficiency to do it. I have the VX550 and its a great unit.

+2. Either can handle it, but I would chose the 550 for the same reasons above.

If you were going to use a PSU calculator I would think the Corsair one would be worth trying. http://www.corsair.com/
  4. 550VX for all of the above reasons plus ...

    Corsair makes three small PSU's:
    Corsair 400CX (30 amp 12 volt rail)

    Corsair 450VX (33 amp 12 volt rail)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139003
    Corsair 550VX (41 amp 12 volt rail)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004

In terms of usable power (the 12 volt rail), the 450VX just is not that much better than the 400CX.
  5. Its always better to have over capacity on the PSU than trying to run a system with the minimum PSU - 550W will be better in this case
  6. ^5 +1 what the others said.

The Corsair VX550 is your best bet and allows for some future upgrades.
