5850: questions regarding PSU and cpu bottleneck (E6750)

Forum Graphics & Displays : AMD Radeon 5850: questions regarding PSU and cpu bottleneck (E6750)

Hi guys, I'm thinking about upgrading my system with one of these prettry sweet 5850's. I'm a little bit concerned if my psu would handle it and if my cpu (E6750) woouldn't bottleneck the 5850 performance.

My current rig is: E6750 (stock speeds), Gigabyte P35C-DS3R, 4x1gb Corsair XMS2, HD4850, 2x500gb Seagate in raid 0, Zalman 460B-aps psu, Cooler Master Mystique.

I read that ati recomends a 500w psu for this card.

I'm planning to buy a Cooler Master HAF932 or a Stom Sniper as weel, since the Mystique isn't that "roomy" and I need better airflow. Unfortunatly, I don't have anough money right now to upgrade to a new i7 plataform, since I'd have to buy Cpu+mobo+ddr3 at once.

So, basically that it: will my Zalman psu hold the 5850? Will the E6750 be a much of a bottleneck to the point I wouldn't be able to enjoy the 5850 performance?

Thanks =)

Sorry for any English mistakes!

I'd like to think your CPU will hold back your GPU some, but overclocking will fix that. However, if you overclock, I would tell you that your PSU wouldn't handle it.

Get a Corsair 550W for $50, or some other PSU. Around the $50 pricepoint is what you will need, and you can get some impressive ones there.

ASUS DirectCU HD6850(875/1100 @2.12v) ~ Phenom II x3 720(x4-920) @ 3.2ghz ~ 4GB OCZ TITANIUM XTC Series (OC'd to 1066) ~ Coolmax 600W ~ 640GB SATA ~ 4x80mm + 1x120mm

The E6750 would only have a perceptible bottleneck at 1920 and higher resolutions.

I agree with Shadow though. Upgrade the PSU as soon as you can and a Corsair CMPSU-550VX 550W is perfect but the new lower rebate put it back up to $79.99 and they're still out of stock.

The thing is: my budget wouldn't let me buy a new psu right now. I'm not in the us. I live in Brazil and things tend to be expensive here, especially psu's. I mean, I can get a 5850 for about R$900 (which would be like U$ 515). The cheapest deal on a Corsair TX750w i found was R$ 510 without shipping. Plus that, I want to get a 750w ish psu cause I may go crossfire in the future when prices get down (with a new motherboard, processor, etc. of course).

So, I if do not overclock anything, do you guys think that my Zalman would be up to the job? (Well, it's a Zalman after all). My budget is damn tight right now :(

About the HAF932... I was really tented to buy it because I found a good deal in a store here where I live, so I could pick it up (and save a lot of cash without the expensive shipping). Their selling it for R$ 650 cash. This case sells for about R$ 900 on the net. I'm only worried about it's lack of dust filters though...

You'll be right on the edge but it will power the system.

Sounds like it might be cheaper to buy the PSU from Newegg and have it shipped to someone you trust in the US and pay them to ship it to Brazil.

If you are planning to eventually go CrossFire, 650 watts and up is the way to go. That Corsair TX750 is a big seller for multi-card owners.

That wouldn't work. It'd be more expensive I guess. Because I would have to pay for the psu, shipping and taxes (yeah, the "taxes guys" here monitor shippings from abroad and taxes them. They say it's smuggling!).

I guess I'll buy the case now and wait a little more to get the 5850 and the psu at once.

Ouch. Didn't know they practically considered it a crime to personally import. Now if you bought 500 and had them shipped in, I could see there concerns.
