Portable Hard Drive data disappeared?

I have a WD 2TB external hard drive that I store movies, music and family photographs on. It is connected to my HD TV via a Sumvision Cyclone MultiMedia HDMI upscaler. This enables me to play the movies on my TV without having to burn them to a DVD.

It has worked no problem up until today. When I went to transfer a movie from my laptop to the WD hard drive, I was prompted to 'format drive' when I connected it to the laptop. I obviously didnt want to format it as I was sure I would lose all my data. I checked the properties and it said it had 0 bytes free and 0 bytes used which has confused me.

Can anybody explained what has happened as it seems as though all my movies, photographs and music has been deleted?

Is there a way I can recover all of this data as I have lots of photographs that I would be sad to lose?

Many thanks in advance.
