Been having trouble for 2 weeks to get ATI CCC and motherboard to detect my 2nd gpu (4770) and I can no longer activate crossfire so I'm completely fed up with it.

So are there any recommendations for a Crossfire and SLI ready motherboard and cpu (AMD or Intel) combo for gaming?

I suggest the Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz and ASUS P7P55D-E Pro, and a new kit of DDR3 RAM. I personally don't know any AM2+ motherboards which support CFX, I know the Crosshair II Formula supports SLI.

Thanks. Will the PCIe dual at x8 / x8 mode hinder my radeon 4770s or is that a good speed for these cards?

Wait, you're going to throw away 400 dollars in cpu/mobo because you can't figure out how to get your 4770s to crossfire?

PCI-E 2.0 @ 8x will only start bottlenecking very high end cards like the 5970 and maybe the GTX 480 from the current generation of cards, and possibly the 4870x2 and GTX 295 from last generation.
