Pentium 4 640 on a i865PE chipset?

Last response: in CPUs

I have gathered some 'old' hardware, among which is a AOpen i865PEa-7IF motherboard. I want to know if this board is compatible with a Pentium 4 640 (SL7Z8 or SL8Q6). AOpen suggest it supports "all Pentium 4" procs, but Intel suggests the 640 will not run on a i865 because of the EM64T extentions.

Can anyone relieve me with a definitive answer?

I would email aopen, and ask if they have a "cpu support" section for your motherboard. I couldn't find one.

Neither can I. What I have been able to figure out is that the i865PE can support pretty much all LGA775 CPUs, even Core Duo; I found this out on Asus' CPU support list for their P5P800-SE board. The only limiting factor that remains is BIOS support. I will try and contact AOpen.

Don't gamble on a core2 duo; I doubt the aopen board will run it. In the best case scenario, it will only run the low end core2 duos at 800 fsb.
