I'm worried the hard drive in my Tivo is about to go kaput because it
occasionally makes a harsh whining sound that I have heard dying hard drives
make before. I'm technical enough to remove the drive and connect it to a
PC running Windows XP... Is there a way to make a bit-by-bit copy of the
drive to back it up? I'd need a comprehensive step-by-step guide if
possible.

Dont use Windows, you have to use Linux.

Thank you. I have a question I cannot find an answer to on that site.

1. If I use a larger drive to upgrade my storage hours, what is the maximum
size of drive I can use?

There is no maximum. Using older software tools, Linux will only "see"
137 Gig per hard drive.

Using a CD from ptvupgrade (they charge $19.99) , and current TiVo OS
(6.2 or 7.1) there is no limit.

Rule 1: Never connect a TiVo drive to an XP box unless you intend to use it
in the XP box forever, never returning it to the TiVo.

One more question. is 5400 RPM ok? I prefer the lower speed as it
generates less heat, but I don't know if that would cause a problem or not.
I'm looking at a 300 GB drive, which seems to be the price sweet spot now.

5400 is good, the TiVo aint that fast of a Linux box that it benefits
from faster HDs.

Is there somewhere you could send a TIVO box and have it upgraded under a
3rd party warranty (if it break, they fix)?

Thanks in advance!

I upgrade and repair TiVos with hard drive problems. I warranty hard
drive upgrades for 1 year. I don't warranty other parts of the system.

They told me that their CD will not transfer my Tivo settings and programs
from my old drive to the new one. I was wondering if I could just use the
CD as a boot disk and then use the instructions at
http://tivo.upgrade-instructions.com/index.php ?

If you're going to use those instructions, why not save $20 and make
your own boot disk following the same instructions?

Because I've been told that the Linux boot disk you get with their
instructions doesn't support 48-bit LBA, which means I'd only be able to use
137 GB of my 300 GB drive. See the following:

Well, if you mean never connect TiVo drive to an XP box *and then boot into
XP* then you have a point. XP does have a tendency to stamp its footprint
on every drive it sees, which can seriously mess up a non-Microsoft boot
drive. There is a utility made specifically to fix Tivo drives that have
been stamped by XP, but it's much safer not to remove the XP drive and set
it aside before connecting the Tivo drive and booting to the Linux disk,
just in case the system doesn't boot to the Linux disk on the first try and
instead loads XP.

Wow...who said that? Weaknees' "support", trying to drum up another sale?

You can download it, too.

Sorry, "it's much safer not to remove the XP drive and set it aside before
connecting the Tivo drive and booting to the Linux disk,"

Should have been

"it's much safer to remove the XP drive and set it aside before connecting
the Tivo drive and booting to the Linux disk,"
