Do viruses cause your cpu usage to skyrocket to 100%

Hello,

What causes CPU usage to skyrocket to 100% when usage is normally a small fraction of that (say 20, no more than 30%, tops!)? Do/can viruses cause this?

Yes they can - press Ctrl-Alt-Del to open the task manager and see what process is using the CPU (be sure you check the see processes from all users) and it should show you what is using the CPU processes.
