Games freezing after overclock

Overclocked my Gigabyte HD 7970 to 1200MHz core clock and 1605MHz memory clock...

Everything runs fine, I play an mmo all the time for hours on end with no problems.

But then I run a game like Skyrim or Saints Row the third and after a while it just freezes and I have to restart.

Furmark runs fine...


What is going wrong?

If you have to ask the question - you are too stupid to attempt overclocking....
Reset it it back to standard and leave it alone.

My first guess would be driver issues. Might not even OC-related. This was always my headache with AMD cards.

When you don't OC the 7970, do you still get lockups in Skyrim?

If so, it's a driver thing. You'll have to wait for the driver update by which AMD's driver team fixes the issue.

Not that I am aware of, I will reset the overclock and play for a few hours and then let you know.

Alright, it's not the overclock on the card... my system just froze while on desktop.

I am going to guess it's either my power supply, or my CPU overclock...

I don't see why it would be my PSU though, it's 5 months old and it's a Corsair TX 750...

Your PSU has more than enough power and there is a chance it could be bad, but like I said, don't discount the catalyst drivers as the culprit. They are what made me stop buying AMD products a little over a year ago.

You could try, but usually you have to wait for the issues to be fixed in future updates. Especially with the brand new cards.

on ultra high... which is actually a fairly nice looking mmo

Looking at speedfan right now and it says I am getting 10.56V off of the +12V rail

Is that bad for idle?
