Hi,

I am thinking about getting a Tivo, but it would have to use wired
Ethernet. It appears that Tivo supports the concept of a
USB-to-Ethernet adapter, but which ones will work with Tivo for sure?

TIA,
Dan

Nevermind, I bought a ReplayTV with built-in ethernet.

Hmm, There seems to be an error on the page. I have a 240-series
unit, and I found this paragraph a bit confusing:
"The following wireless network adapters are compatible with all TiVo
Series2 DVRs except for DVRs with a 15-digit TiVo service number,
beginning with 110, 130, or 140. If the 15-digit TiVo service number
on your DVR begins with 110, 130, or 140, view ALL wireless adapters."

Then I realized that both sentences refer to the SAME service
numbers..

Just curious - but you know the RTV supports fewer networking features
than TiVo now, and is no longer being developed, right?

Both TiVo and RTV now support transferring shows to/from a PC,
multi-room viewing (sharing between units in a home), and web based
scheduling.

TiVo also supports music playback and photo viewing, Home Media Engine
(an API for 3rd party developers with a number of cool applications
already out there, the best being Galleon), and they're getting ready
to rollout broadband content delivery.

Frankly I think the other TiVo feature, like the entire scheduling
system, beats the pants off RTV's system.

So what swayed you to buy RTV?

Built-in ethernet. I just need basic DVR with large hard drive. Comes
with a 30 day guarantee so I will return it if I don't like it. Also, D
& M Holdings would seem to have more working capital to improve the
product and keep the service running.

Hmm, Dan, I think you need to review MZ's post again:

>> you know the RTV <snip> is no longer being developed, right?

I don't think I'd expect a lot of product improvements.

Where is the evidence for this statement?

Public record. DNNA cancelled all new feature development on the RTV
platform that was going on when they acquired ReplayTV. There has
been no new HW since the 5000. (The 5500 is just a 5500 with new
software.) DNNA finished the build in development at the time, and
removed SendShow and Commercial Advance (adding Show|Nav to replace
the latter). They cancelled the promised MP3 playback, USB WiFi
adapter support, and 4k-5k interoperability. All were promised under
SonicBlue and cancelled by DNNA. SonicBlue had also talked publically
about developing a RTV with DVD, nothing more was said about that
after the bankruptcy. There have been no new features added to RTV
for some time, and only minor software updates with fixes.

DNNA gutted ReplayTV's engineering group. Many engineers were
transferred to Enscient where they were working on planned high end
entertainment servers which were supposed to have DVR functionality.
They showed a prototype, but it never shipped and it is way, way
overdue at this point. It was supposed to ship in 2004, but they
announcedit was delayed - then it just faded away. It isn't clear
what's happening with that now.

DNNA has stated they're focusing on licensing the RTV intellectual
property and not on product development - and, indeed, they recently
licensed some of the RTV tech to a Chinese company for use in China.

DNNA also just dumped most of what constituted the Rio brand and
cancelled scheduled Rio products.

D&M/DNNA has traditionally focused on the high end of the market, and
it looks like they don't have a lot of interest in the low end gear -
for them RTV is low end. They sell multi-thousand dollar media
servers, which have a much higher profit margin. It looks like thye
basically bought RTV for the intellectual property and don't care to
continue product development.

ReplayTV has been stagnant for a couple of years now.

It is still a decent system for what it is, but I wouldn't expect
anything new, just what it does today.

Well, here's an article from when they were sold to SONICblue...a move
which many figured was a death blow.

Now, of course, an article can be found on the internet claiming the death
of TiVo, MicroSoft, TV in general, and the internet itself. However, this
article is mostly correct and...well...let's just say the boxes aren't any
more 'alive' today than they were at the time this article was written. I
particularly like the part where they say "Maybe TiVo has something figured
out that we don't understand". Yes...yes, they do.

There's also http://www.replayfaqs.com/

Basically, ReplayTV, regardless of owner, has made it very very clear they
have NO interest in the PVR business at all. You can believe that or not.
