Diagnose problem with WD elements external Hard drive

My Western Digital 2TB Elements external hard-drive was working perfectly 2 days ago and now on the same laptop (which is reading other usb devices with no problems and running fine) it is not recognised in either my computer or disk manager.

When powered up, the light flashes, there are no clicking sounds and the disk spins but eventually stops.
Before I pay a fortune for someone to pull it appart and hopefully recover my data can anyone run me through some diagnostics I might try?

  1. External WD drives are very unstable in my opinion. You can try and use Linux to get the data. Google "Linux Live" It will allow you to boot a OS using just a USB or CD. Once you are in the Linux OS, you might be able to access some of the files.
