Ok so i am building a new system for my friend. He is going to do mostly gaming and regular use stuff.
Here is what i am planning on building him based off what he wants:

Amd Phenom 2 x4 955 black edition
MSI nforce 980a Sli mobo
2 nvidia geforce gtx 260s in sli
antect earthwatts 650w psu
4gb patriot vviper ddr3 ram

Along with the other stuff it comes out to 1,023.

Any suggestions on different parts?

Also: How would this system stack up again my current system?

Core 2 Quad q6600 oc 3.3ghz
Gigabyte x48 ds5 mobo
2 radeon hd 4890s in crossfire
patriot viper 4gb ddr2 1066
corsair 650w psu

Core i5 750 w/Radeon 5850. (Microcenter sells the i5 750 for $150 if you're nearby).
Corsair 650TX.

i was thinking a 5850 or 5870 but he is ready to buy. any word on when they will be back in stock?

Your current C2Q system is probably faster at games since the 4890s are newer and faster than GTX 260s. You wont beat a quad core @ 3.3GHz and a pair of 4890s by much with anything available today. You really should consider a 5850 or 5870 instead of a pair of outdated 260s since DX11 games are already being released. IN a couple years he may be unhappy stuck at DX10.

but just one disadvantage no dx11...that's the sad part if the OP wants that..if he doesn't then it's all good.

to OP: what's his budget? a i5 750 build would be better than amd build..

A pair of 5770s would perform almost as well as a pair of 260s at about the same price and have DX11. It would use alot less power and run quieter and cooler also.

^true, but 2x4870 would be the best deal if he doesn't care for dx11..

the op needs to clarify at what resolution, what games, what settings (AA on?), and other things too..

If 5770s were a bit cheaper, or if they were a bit faster than the 4870/GTX 260 instead of a bit slower they would be an obvious choice. As it is that price/performance area is a bit murky. The only thing that is clear is the 4870 is a better deal than the 260 and the 250/9800 at their current prices are not even a consideration.

^yes totally agree, only if they made 5770 faster, they went cheap on the 128 bit bus

Sorry i have not been home all day.

He has a 22 inch monitor so im assuming he will be at 1680x1050. And he wants to be able to play most current and new games on max settings and at least 2aa.

Ok i will see what i can build with an i5 and what i can build with the Phenom 2 955 on an amd chipset.

Oh btw, $1,100 is the budget. He already has monitor, mouse, keyboard, speaks etc. just needs main parts.
