Front panel sound from MB or sound card?

In the front of my case, I have a plug for headphones, which I have connected to the motherboard. I also have an older sound card (Audigy 2) that I've installed in a PCI port.
I was wondering if the sound I'll be getting when having headphones plugged into the front panel is from the sound card or the onboard motherboard sound?
I would imagine the motherboard isn't smart enough route the sound from the sound card, but I figured I would check with the experts.

Thanks in advance!

  1. connect it to what ever sound card your speakers are connected to.
  2. The thing is that my sound card did not have a connection that fit with the cable. It may be because it is an older card?
It only had a 3-pin connector, whereas the connector I put in the motherboard was 4x2 pins (with one corner missing a pin) - if I recall correctly.

It is not a big deal, I don't think I will be able to tell a difference with the sound, but I got curious.
