My Recovery (D) states 10.1 md free of 9.99 GB
my OS9C) states 143 GB free of 222 GB.

If I understand this, there is no way I can increase the d to hold 111 GB...Should have looked at it first, I do need an external drive.

Let me know if I'm right....

There is no reason to increase your "D" drive to 111 GB. It is designed to be 9.99 GB and will delete any necessary files / folders to maintain the capacity. It is a "recovery" drive only, not a 2nd partition.
