You had a £10,000 budget, and wanted a super gaming rig, but weren't allowed to use Intel CPUs or Nvidia Graphics?

AMD Phenom II X4 965, 4 ATI Hd 5870s in Quad SLI, and the usual top of the line components.

For the gfx card, quad sli is unnecesarry, but i'll take it just coz I have the massive budget

Also don't forget about a windtunnel and half the waterpipes in the utility grid to keep it cool, and a personal nuclear powerplant to keep it fed and happy...

Reply to Silmarunya

xbonez, what about the CPU bottleneck? It'd be tremendous in that instance.

Silmarunya, very funny, but 10k isn't 10 billion... and some people do have 10k to spend on a machine so this is a quasi-realistic question :p

Reply to Dandalf

AMD and ATI dont charge enough to make a 10K Computer. :p

Better to to make a good 2K computer and bank the rest so you can replace it every 2 years.

"Quad SLI" ......

Reply to Sonic-Boom

You know its impossible to SLI ATI graphics cards, right? :p

(Its called crossfire) ;)

What about hexa, or octa-core server chips? I mean if you had 10k to spend... ?

Or, are there motherboards out there that enable two AM3 cpu's to be installed??

I think we have established the 5870 or 5890 is the way to go for graphics, but being limited to a phenom II 965 BE would induce much lulz from intel users. :(

Reply to Dandalf

thuban hexacore coming q3-4 2010

well, you said no Intel, so I picked the fastest AMD processor. In he budget, I could probably set up a LN2 coolng system and OC the procy to maybe 5Ghz or so to reduce the bottleneck.

Well lets see, Id probably set up a 30+ 30 Inch monitor sphere station powered by 4 Phenom II X4's in 2 dual processor Mobo's with 6 SAPPHIRE 100281VXSR Radeon HD 5870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 GPU's (3 in each board) and 16 Gigs of RipJaw's DDR3 2200 Memory (8 In each Board) with 2 1200 Watt Corsair PSU's with 12v Rails (1 for each Board) In a Liquid cooled open ended Base, blasted with 3 500 MM Fans on each side.

All this just to play Diablo 2-3 Starcraft 1-2 and CS, Epic Pwn!

Is this even possible? I mean, to 'link' mbs in this way

Reply to Dandalf

i know there are dual processor motherboards, but i have no idea if you can use two such motherboards in tandem.

It was just an on the fly reply, the 30+ 30" monitors would already put it well above the 10K limit ><

Are you going to build such system or you are day dreaming ?

Reply to ibnsina

you could probably get two 30" monitors for a total of $3000, so that would still leave you with quite a lot of cash.

day dreaming. why would he 'not be allowed to use intel CPUs and nvidia graphics' ?

Definitely day dreaming, 30+ means 30 different 30" screens, it wasn't even a serious reply, just for laughs.
