2 gig limit on presario laptop

I have a laptop with intel chips. The laptop is a Compaq Presario A900; more specifically a A916nr. The memory controller is an 82GM965. Compaq says this laptop will only support 2 gigs of mem at PC2 5300. The intel website says this chip is capable of 4 gigs at PC 5300. So my question is how did Compaq limit the physical memory address size? Did the cripple the chip with software or did they "damage" the chip? If it is only a soft ware limitation could it be circumvented, by changing the bios or flashing a firmware?

Well that is actually why there is a limit, Compaq uses a specific BIOS for there laptops that limit what it is capable of doing, this cannot be circumvented, a special BIOS is used to be able to setup the board then it is locked, cannot be unlocked and or changed. Only Asus, MSI and Sager make Laptops that can change components and BIOS, no other will even put out a laptop BIOS (Unless you work for the company)
