Foolish Overclocking question

Recently, I was playing a game and my monitor suddenly went black, then the whole pc crashed (buzzing from speakers). I restarted and the monitor didn't come on. I opend my case and saw the fan on my gpu didn't spin up. I unplugged and plugged back in the 6-pin power connector and now it's working fine. However, I just want to know if that simply came loose, or if my overclock is wrecking my card (more than it should, lol) I've had it overclocked for about a week with no other problems. (Its done 1 hour of furmark and lots of sc2 and skyrim)
My gpu is a radeon 6850 msi cyclone pe (775/1000) to (890/1000). I've never played with the voltage.

I have never even come close to it getting that hot.....Good to know that it shuts down before frying itself though. But why would replugging the power cable be needed?

it trips the ic programming flag that remains high or low until the power is removed with resets the program to its default setting
