I'm building a new box and if I only care about "decent" stereo sound (not 5.1 nor 7.1 nor AD quality) why get a sound card at all? Don't most good mobos today have above average stereo DA converters?

If it's advised to get one for a gaming rig for other reasons, recommendations on brands and models? (PCI or PCIe)

unless you are an audiophile, the onboard audio on most boards is fine
