4890 Drivers/ Windows 7

My windows 7x 64bit works fine untill I install my ati screen drivers and windows 7 turns pear shape .
windows becomes unresponsive for 1-4 seconds and works again for 1-4 seconds.over and over. boot time is about 7-10 min.
Note, this is a fresh install of windows, and I was using the latest CCC drivers from AMD/ATi.

My system for what it's worth;
AMD 4600+ AM2
650 Thermaltake PSU
PCiE x16 motherboard with
2gig DDR 2 667 RAM
and a Club 3D ATi 4890
running 2 160 gig Seagate HHD's
