Desktop icons wont open

help!!! My desktop icons have changed to ermmmmm like a little blue picture(sorry im not good with computers or jargon!!) and when i try to open them it says"windows viewer cant open this picture because either photo viewer dosent support this format or you dont have the latest updates to photo viewer" This all started after my girlfriend opened a photo from her cousin!! a couple of icons are still there like sky broadband and the recycle bin but nothing else works,the programmes are all still there cause i can access them other ways but its just a pain in the butt!!lol I have ran scans for virsus...nothing,systems restore...still no joy,i know its probably something simple but just cant figure it out!!plz help b4 i go nuts!!!!

Tried Malwarebytes Scanner ? Sounds like system is still infected.
DO NOT delete any TEMP folders ! Files may have been moved there -
Run unhide utility from www.bleepingcomputer.com

If still no joy, Boot from Windows CD & repair the OS.
