I noticed that 4 of the pins of the 8 pin power connector were capped on the motherboard. Why? Should I pull the cap and still use the standard 8 pin connector?
Noob Question 2:
I noticed that 1 PCI-E lead coming off the power supply was split into 2 at the end. (wires go into connector then anther set come out of that connector and go to another)
Are those 2 connectors off 1 lead good enough to run a 5870 or do I need to run 2 different leads to the card to give it the power it needs?
1. You can use the full 8-pin on the Mobo, I am pretty sure that half are capped so that if you only use 4, you will use the right 4. But using 8 is fine.
2. Using two connectors from one lead for the GPU should be fine as well, and I am pretty sure that is what it is designed for.
Number 1 - Yes. To double check, the yellow wires go toward the outside edge of the motherboard.
Number 2 - I do not know if the 5870 uses two 6 pin connectors or a 6 pin and an 8 pin connector. According to the newegg site, your PSU has two 6 pin connectors and two 6+2 pin connectors.
Use a 6+2 connector in an 8 pin PCI-e socket or the 6 pin section by itself in a 6 pin socket. It doesn't matter as long as both video card sockets are connected to the PSU.
